Woo, an update. For those of you who don’t know, I like to put tunes on top of other tunes. I heard the Commodore 64 version of the Monty On The Run soundtrack by Rob Hubbard the other day* and, being me, decided to put loads of old rap/R’n'B acapellas over the top. More hackneyed than the E8 postal district, but hey:

Yes, yes, I know, it’s been an absolute dog’s age since my last update. I’ve mostly been busy with family stuff but have found time to listen repeatedly to Yeasayer‘s brilliant new album, Odd Blood. The single O.N.E. has been getting some pretty heavy airplay on Radio 6 Music, and it’s not even the best thing on the album (current favourite track – the David-Sylvian-goes-raving Love Me Girl, but it’s all good).

Anyway as the single version of of O.N.E. contains an instrumental I thought I’d throw together a bootleg, with indie disco favourites The Automatic providing the vocals (and a cheeky guitar solo). If I’m going to carry on doing these things I might as well use stuff I like, eh? Oh and by the way, I’m now Lee Spoons for all future productions – new decade and all that, plus I was fed up with people inserting commas and removing zeroes into 10000.

I really must keep up with this thing. This is only a test post for @michlan on twitter anyway, and I’ve no idea what sort of music she likes, although I think she may have mentioned going to see Scouting For Girls once, which is a tad worrying.

First Men At Work get sued by a bunch of Girl Guides (well, pretty much), and now Eddy Grant is jumping on the plagiarism gravy train, accusing Gorillaz of nicking a three-note keyboard riff from his 1983 song, Time Warp. (My opinion? Same key, different tempos, probably accidental and I’d be very surprised if Eddy got any money out of it. But what do I know?)

Anyway, leading on from that here’s the first in a new series called Separated At Birth – two records that I think sort of sound a little bit similar to each other if you’re not listening too closely and have your head stuck in a bucket of custard. Jane’s Addiction and The Cure… but which came first? The Cure song was released a year before the Jane’s song, but there’s live footage on Youtube of the Jane’s song which (it is claimed) is from a year before the Cure song was released, so who knows? Who cares? Tune in next week for another episode!

Mashup Monday

Normally I hate the word “mashup” – when I started doing them in my bedroom twenty-odd years ago they were called “bootlegs” if they were called anything, and when releasing them over the interweb in 2003 the term “bastard pop” was also being thrown about – but like it or not, “mashup” has become the preferred term for two or more records mixed together. Nobody really uses the term “bastard pop” any more, and “bootleg” confuses the hell out of people who come looking for old Hawkwind concerts recorded by Thomas Edison on shellac discs in 1873 (or something).

Mashup Monday, then. Every Monday I’m going to post a mashup by someone – either a video, or a streaming player, or something that enables you to listen to said mashup without buggering off somewhere else. Sometimes if I’m feeling lazy they’ll be old ones of mine, like this from 2005 (I think) – it’s LFO vs The Communards, released under the nom de boot of Fudge Tools. I was listening to Radio Babylon by Meat Beat Manifesto the other day when something bleedin’ obvious struck me. Have a listen and see if you can guess what:

No, not the fact that Liam Howlett half-inched the breakbeat for Charly a year later, nor the fact that the bassline sounds very similar to FSOL’s Papua New Guinea (but not identical, as I once proved to Tim from Mutant Pop/Radio Clash by singing both basslines to him – he wasn’t entirely convinced, but I was drunk).

It’s not even the fact that this was one of the very first proto-jungle tunes (although it was).

Nope, it’s the source of the main vocal sample.

I’ve been meaning to start one of these for ages, so here goes. It’s a music blog (how 2007!), and occasionally I might post a link to the odd mp3, but more than that, it’s somewhere for me to waffle on about the music that, well, sets me ears alight…

I’m probably going to be posting a lot of old skool rave, but also hip hop, indie, jungle, acid house, bootlegs, mashups, some modern stuff, and the odd rant about the unbearable shiteness of Scouting For Girls.
